human confessional
2008
28 minutes
2-channel sound installation
Originally stationed in a blackened and sealed sound booth, Human Confessional includes the listener in a direct, one-way conversation with a character detailing her habits, thoughts, struggles and humiliations. The crux of the piece is a listener's investment, whether they feel empathy towards the voice or completely overwhelmed.
The original installation enclosed one participant at a time in complete darkness with a single pair of headphones. The environment is set up in such a way that forces intimacy, almost as if they are in a quiet but rather relentless part of the character's subconscious.
Human Confessional was recorded with a MZ-NH700 Minidisc recorder. It was on display at UWM's Kenilworth Square gallery space in May 2008. What is available here is an edited eight minute excerpt.
