karen
2008
single screen Isadora installation with 2-channel sound & microphone
On May 15, 2008 karen was shown in the UWM music building along with several other sound and music installations. It consists of two pieces of found footage superimposed over one another and was constructed to be sound sensitive to any interaction.
The first piece of footage is video taken of a underpass in Paris. The second piece is of model Karen Elson's segment for Nick Knight's More Beautiful Women, a video project for SHOWstudio. When placed together it appears as if the tunnel continuously cycles through Elson's head, and her discomfort at our gaze seems all the more real.
If someone interacted with the microphone or came too close the screen it would begin to flicker and turn red, emitting a distorted and disturbing rumble. It becomes apparent that the female figure before us is not only aware of our gaze and interaction, but is disturbed by it and wants to be left alone.
Because of Isadora's technical perameters there is no way to display it here. Please feel free to check out its site for more examples of its installations and projects.
